“I came to my close friends and family years ago. And I wanted to do it in public because I wanted to stay ahead of the narrative,” he said. “I just wanted to own the story and make sure I did it on my own terms. My biggest fear was that I would only be remembered for being gay.”

At the time it came out, Fates announced a donation of $100,000 to The Trevor Project, an organization focused on suicide prevention and support for the LGBTQ community. His donation prompted the NFL to match it, as well as numerous anonymous messages to The Trevor Project thanking Luck for his decision.

While Naseeb was grateful for the support he received and the positivity generated by him, he said he expected such announcements to be needed in the long run.

“(I) really hope that one day these kind of videos and the whole process that follows is not necessary,” he said. “When people come out, they’re coming out of the closet because they’re afraid. They’re afraid there’s going to be a negative impact on their lives, their relationships, their jobs.

“I just hoped that one day we wouldn’t have those fears – this is the society I hope for one day. And I hope I can make a positive effort in that direction.”
