It’s not every day that a productive, 22-year-old wing trade is available on the market, let alone six months removed from an explosive performance in a conference finals game. On Thursday, the New York Knicks reportedly acquired Cam Radish from the team that beat him in last year’s playoffs.

Radish was not available for the Atlanta Hawks in that series, but returned from an Achilles injury to play four games against the Milwaukee Bucks. In the final game of Atlanta’s unexpectedly successful season, he came off the bench to shoot 6-for-7 from 3-point range, making a comeback that eventually fell short.

Radish attended The Haverford School in Haverford, Pennsylvania as a freshman before transferring to Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where he teamed up with 2017 five-star recruit and current NBA player Mohamed Bamba. As a junior, Reddish averaged 16.2 points per game and led Moose to the Friends School League title. During the summer of 2017, Reddish played on the Nike EYBL circuit with his Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, Team He averaged 23.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the final. Later that summer, he played for the United States men’s national under-19 basketball team.  He was originally scheduled to play for the under-17 team the previous summer, but was not on the team due to injury.  In his senior year, he averaged 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Following his senior season, he was named the 2018 Mr. Pennsylvania Basketball.  Reddit was selected to play at the 2018 McDonald’s All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit All-Star Games.

Even before the Hawks’ poor showing, Radish was a popular business candidate, simply because paying everyone for the front office would be difficult. Forward D’Andre Hunter will be extend-able at the same time as the Reddish, and the extensions that Trey Young and Kevin Huerter have already signed will arrive next season. No one likes to lose young talent for nothing, and having a small army of young people fighting for minutes and touches can create chemistry problems, hence a “consolidation trade” – that is, for a better one. Packaging for many good players – has long seemed like a logical way to go. It is not exactly the same, but only because we do not know what will happen next.

If the Hawks ended up packaging this pick with Hunter or Hutter (or Bogdan Bogdanovic or John Collins or Clint Capella or Danilo Gallinari or Oneka Okongwu, in theory), they would effectively pull off a consolidation trade. He would have just executed it in two parts.

However, there is no guarantee that Atlanta will make any further moves before the February 10 deadline, or that the next superstar bidding war will be the best offer on the table. All of this gives hawks flexibility and, in the short term, allows them to spread the minutes and uses of the reddish around. It also ensures that they will pay close attention to Charlotte’s record as long as they own this protected pick.

It’s fair to wonder whether Atlanta could have gotten more for the Reds had they waited until the close of the deadline. If the Knicks see the upside in Reddish, they are certainly thrilled that they have achieved that without surrendering to any of the young players currently in their rotation. While Knox deserves a shot as a “second draft” man, the deal would look better for the Hawks with Obie Toppin or Quentin Grimes.

On Thursday, the Knicks traded the protected first-round pick of Kevin Knox and Charlotte to the Atlanta Hawks for Cam Radish, Solomon Hill, a second-round pick. The deal served as the starting gun for the NBA trade season, and as New York’s first shakeup to its roster since the off-season.

Inbound is Radish, a former 10th overall pick of RJ Barrett and college teammate. While the Hawks were very deep on the wings and also invested in other contract extensions to keep them up, the Knicks saw potential growth in their young corps.

Is hurt

Atlanta Hawks forward Cam Radish underwent a “non-surgical procedure” on Monday to repair an Achilles tendon injury.

The team said that Radish will wear a walking boot on his right foot and will be reevaluated in a week.

The second-year forward has struggled in his first two NBA seasons, averaging 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds on 37.8 percent shooting. While there were indications that Radish had work to do during his solitary season at Duke, his performance level has been disappointing.

The poor game was exacerbated by an Achilles injury that had already cost him six games, and the Hawks have been one of the NBA’s biggest disappointments following an off-season signing.
