On his first touch down in his reunion with the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Cam Newton scored a touchdown. On his second, he threw for one.

Newton, who signed with the Panthers on Thursday, entered Sunday’s game against the Cardinals early in the first quarter when Arizona quarterback Colt McCoy made a foul in the first possession of the game. On second and goal from the Cardinals’ 2-yard line, Newton took a shotgun snap and ran to the right, swaying two Arizona tacklers and powering for a touchdown.

As he celebrated in the end zone, he took off his helmet and shouted “I’m back!” At times for the crowd, the audio was picked up by Fox broadcast cameras.

Cam Newton is back.

Carolina Panthers have agreed to a one-year contract to bring back quarterback Cam Newton to the franchise, which drafted him No. 1 overall in 2011.

Carolina was light on the quarterback after starter Sam Darnold fractured his shoulder blade after losing 24-6 at the hands of the New England Patriots last week.

Panthers coach Matt Roulette said earlier on Wednesday that PJ Walker is expected to start Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Matt Barkley, dropped from the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad, is expected to be his backup. It is not clear whether Newton’s return will change this.

Newton has struggled in recent years to return to the level of play that earned him league MVP honors in 2015, partly due to shoulder and leg injuries. Newton is 7-16 in his last 23 career passes with 20 interceptions and 17 touchdown passes. He has racked up 12 touchdowns during that period.

He spent nine seasons with the Panthers, throwing for 29,041 yards with 182 touchdown passes and 111 interceptions. He also set the NFL record for most career touchdowns reached by quarterback during his tenure at Carolina.

Newton’s best season came in 2015 when he combined for 45 touchdowns — 35 passing and 10 rushing — and helped the Panthers reach the Super Bowl after leading 15-1 during the regular season. Newton was released by the Panthers in a salary cap move ahead of the 2020 season after losing his last eight starts to the Panthers.

Contract

Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton reunited on a one-year deal Thursday, with the one-time ex-current Panthers quarterback cashing in on a big pay day to return to Carolina and help solve their QB woes.

The Panthers made the move in the wake of Sam Darnold’s shoulder injury, which would put him off for four to six weeks. Now, Newton returns to the spot where he won an MVP and toured a Super Bowl—making some good Cheddar in the process.

Here’s how much Newton would earn in his second stint with the Panthers:

Newton made an impact in his first season, where he set rookie records for passing (4,051) and rushing yards (706) by quarterback, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in the process. The league’s first rookie quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season [4] and the first to throw for 400 yards in his NFL debut, [5] he also set the season record for quarterback rushing touchdowns at 14. [6] Between 2013 and 2017, Newton led the Panthers to three division titles and four playoff appearances. He is one of four African-American quarterbacks to win the NFL MVP and was the first to achieve it outright. [7]

After his MVP campaign, Newton struggled with injuries as the Panthers made the playoffs only once in their subsequent four seasons. After missing the majority of the 2019 season due to surgery, he was released by Carolina and played the 2020 season with the New England Patriots. He was released by the Patriots at the start of the 2021 season and signed by the Panthers on November 12, 2021, marking his first action in a limited role during a week 10 game versus the Arizona Cardinals.
