College football is a game of tremendous ups and downs – sometimes, even within a single game.

No single player fared better in Week 10 of the college football season than former Oklahoma football quarterback Caleb Williams. The USC signal-caller was exceptional vs. No. 5 Washington on Saturday, but was still a part of a 52-42 loss. The projected top-five pick of the 2024 NFL Draft was later seen crying on the sidelines with his mother following the Trojans’ third loss in four games.

Williams’ potential frustration may be linked to the fact that he outshot his Huskies counterpart, Michael Penix Jr.: The former completed 27 of 35 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns and added another score on the ground. Penix completed 22 of 30 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns to one interception, also adding a rushing score.

Tom Hanks memorably said, “There’s no crying in baseball.” He was wrong. Sports are emotional and sentimental. Humans are emotional and sentimental. It feels great to win. Losing is considered painful, at least among those who actually care about winning. Caleb Williams cares a lot about winning. That’s why he was so heartbroken after the USC loss. Playing well is less important than helping his team win. Caleb missed, even though he did everything he could and scored 42 points for the Trojans.

As you can imagine, the sight of an elite athlete β€” a Heisman Trophy winner and potential No. 1 NFL draft pick β€” crying with his mom after a loss received strong reactions on social media.
