Bryce Harper will be sidelined indefinitely with a broken left thumb after hitting Blake Snell’s pitch in Philadelphia’s 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

“I wish it hit my face,” said Harper, who was wearing a bandage around his thumb. “I don’t break bones in my face. I feel like I can take 98 [mph] in the face, but not 97 with a thumb. Yeah I was kind of in safety mode trying to raise my hand and not let it hit me again. It’s just a bummer. I’m really freaked out.”

The current NL MVP, who was hit in the face last year by a fastball from St. Louis’ Genesis Cabrera, having missed only a few games, checked his swing as a 97 mph fastball from Snell went in and hit him. He was raised high towards his shoulder before hitting him. Left hand outside in the fourth inning. Harper immediately fell to the ground and was in visible pain as he held his hand on his knees for several minutes while Philips head coach Paul Bouchet looked after him.

Bryce Harper, when he lay on the ground Wednesday night in St. Louis after hitting his face at a speed of 97 mph, touched his cheek and nose, to see if he was bleeding or Only hurt. There was a small cut, but the Phillies slugger said it “didn’t feel like it was running water.”

And then Harper overheard the home-plate umpire, who was only a few feet off the pitch, instructing him to stay on the ground.

“And I thought to myself, ‘No. I’m getting up,'” Harper said on Friday. “Like, I’m not going out here. I’m up, never mind. If I fall, I fall. But I’m getting up.”

Harper was able to walk off the field at Bush Stadium and two days later still couldn’t believe how it all happened.

He was expecting Cardinals left-hander Genesis Cabrera to throw a curveball, but the reliever came inside with a first-pitch fastball instead. Harper tried to get out of the way but couldn’t. After leaving the field, he was taken to a nearby hospital with Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations.
