Disgraced former NRL star Brett Finch says he left messages of child abuse in a desperate attempt to obtain drugs, but is now “hating” himself, a court has heard.
Finch, 41, is fighting to avoid being sent to prison after using a gay sex chat service to send sick messages about young boys.

Finch was arrested after police raided his Sans Suisse home on the morning of December 14 last year.
He was asked by his barrister Mr. Smith why he left many messages of child abuse over several months.
“In the hope that I might get cocaine,” said Mr Finch.
“This was during the lockdown period… when the dealers were not driving on the road. And in despair, I saw an opportunity. I tried every dealer in my phone with no luck. ,
“It made me sick, I was disgusted, I immediately told him he was a sick f*** and f*** off. What I said in those messages was terrible,” Finch said.
He described himself as “disgusting” and said it “made me feel sick” and that he wanted to “strangle” the other person involved in the exchange of messages.
“It’s something I’m sorry about, it makes me sick now, that I contributed to that kind of reaction,” Finch told the court.
