Iowa State’s Bryce Hall is an NFL running back.

One of the top three backs in Iowa State history was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night.

Several NFL draft experts named Hall as the 25th pick of the first round after his junior season for Buffalo left Iowa State. That attitude suddenly changed when bills were traded. The Bills were traded to get a Florida cornerback Kier alum, not a running back.

On Friday, it was the Jets who traded to get Hall, considered a three-down back for the modern NFL. He was the first running back selected in the draft, as well as the first Big 12 conference player to be picked.

“Bryce has prepared for this moment and I am thrilled for him and his family,” said Iowa State coach Matt Campbell. “Bryce had a really special career at Iowa State and played such an important role in the success of our program over the past few seasons. The Jets are getting a special player and person and I look forward to seeing his career grow.”

The NFL began to shift its focus to the draft boards. For NFL fans, draft season is all about identifying the best players in each position and being hopeful that your team is in a position to draft that person if they feel they are in urgent need of it.

The easiest way to go about this is usually to identify the number 1 player at each spot in the draft. But so far, identifying consensus No. 1 on certain positions has been a struggle—and still an ongoing discussion—between casual NFL fans and NFL experts, coaches, and general managers. There’s an unanswered battle between Kywan Thibodaux and Aidan Hutchinson for who is the best defensive end, a battle between Evan Neal and Ikem Ekwonu for the best offensive finish, and the most wide-open race of them all. Which is running the best.

For the latter, it appears to be a four-man race between Brian Robinson Jr. of Alabama, Kenneth Walker III of Michigan State, and Texas A.

Record

Iowa State running back Bryce Hall set a new NCAA record with the fastest touchdown in the 24th game on Friday in a 48-14 win against TCU. The All-American also scored career-highs in rushing yards (242) and touchdowns (four) in a game on Friday.

With a 39-yard touchdown in the second quarter, Hall broke East Arkansas, surpassing Bill Burnett’s record of 23 consecutive games with touchdowns, a record that stood for 51 years. Hall added a 22-yard receiving score in the third quarter, and a fast TD of 80 and 4 yards in the fourth.

“If it’s for Bryce Hall, there’s a way out,” said Iowa State coach Matt Campbell.

With three Rushing touchdowns, Hall reached 20 Rushing TDs for the second consecutive season. Junior entered Friday’s game on 235 carries with 1,230 rushing yards.

Hall’s last game without a touchdown was his freshman year – December 28, 2019, in a 33-9 loss to Notre Dame at the Camping World Bowl. Hall has 50 rushing touchdowns in 36 career games.
