Baker Mayfield: Whats wrong with| what happened to| Is injured

As Mayfield galloped from Heinz Field, with the game ball still in hand, Cleveland’s other former No. 1 overall pick, Miles Garrett, was waiting. While walking side by side in the celebration, the two met in the middle of the air.

At that point, it seemed as though all doubts about Mayfield had been dispelled. After wandering aimlessly in the quarterbacking jungle for decades, the Browns finally got their franchise pass.

A rejuvenated Mayfield, who had weathered the initial turmoil in Cleveland, was set to be center back for the Browns for the next decade-plus. A longer-term contract extension also appeared in the shutdown.

A lot has changed as Mayfield and Brown are back in Pittsburgh for Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN). After entering the 2021 season with Super Bowl hopes, at 7-8, Cleveland has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with only two games to go.

Is injured

With Baker Mayfield’s 2021 season underway, the Browns quarterback’s backup revealed on Wednesday how shocking it was to see him get injured at times.

Browns backup quarterback Case Keenum said on Zoom, “I’ve noticed he hit a little closer than most people—probably his wife and his mom and then me.” “I may be the third to see how carefully he rises, but he’s tough.

“Yeah, there were a couple of weeks where he had to field, it was a small miracle.”

Browns coach Kevin Stefansky announced Tuesday that Mayfield will not play in Sunday’s season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals and will soon undergo shoulder surgery. In a procedural move on Wednesday, Brown placed Mayfield on injured reserve.

Mayfield suffered a completely torn labrum and a concussion in his left, non-throwing shoulder in Week 2 while attempting an interception return tackle against the Houston Texans. Mayfield played through shoulder issues—she also suffered a fractured humerus bone in Week 6—worn a harness to prevent it from dislocating repeatedly and sustained lower body injuries (left heel, left heel) throughout the season.
