Surgery
The Cleveland Browns defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 18 of the 2021 NFL season. A season that did not live up to the team’s expectations, Bengal ended on a high note against several backups. Cleveland provided its home fans with something positive to watch without having to worry about NFL Draft positioning.
For the Browns’ future, QB Baker Mayfield’s health is the most important thing. Earlier Sunday, we covered a report from NFL Network that the team and Mayfield skipped their exit meeting with plans for a reunion in 2022.
As is known from earlier in the season, Mayfield is facing off-season shoulder surgery to deal with his torn labrum, which has plagued him throughout the season.
Draft class
The first round of the 2018 NFL Draft took five quarterbacks, a class that has changed the course of many franchises—two of which ended a playoff-win drought that lasted more than a quarter-century. The Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills are becoming perennial playoff contenders with the franchise quarterback selected in the 2018 draft, while the Cleveland Browns ended decades of playoff futility with the franchise quarterback they picked with the No. 1 overall pick.
The New York Jets are still in flux about the quarterback they picked in the 2018 draft, while the Arizona Cardinals have already moved on from their QB pick — and found a new franchise quarterback a year later. This historic NFL Draft class of quarterback has provided more hits than misses, shaking the balance of power in the AFC playoffs for 2020—and for years to come.
As three of these quarterbacks have won playoff games and made the divisional playoffs, we’ll take a look at each quarterback in the 2018 draft class in this week’s “By the Numbers.”
Cleveland browns
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will not play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday so he can proceed with surgery to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing left shoulder, Browns coach Kevin Stefansky said.
A source told ESPN that Mayfield will undergo surgery on January 19 in the Los Angeles area with Dr. Or Limpisvasti.
A league source told ESPN that Mayfield could return in time to participate in the OTAs, which usually take place around the league in May or June.
The case keenum will begin in the Browns’ regular season finale against the Bengals on Sunday.
Mayfield, who has been battling a shoulder injury for two weeks, admitted after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night that he was “beaten up very badly.” Mayfield was dismissed nine times in the game.
“When I wasn’t healthy I continued to put it on the line and try to fight for my people,” said Mayfield, playing with a harness over the shoulder to keep it from popping out of place. “It’s time for me to start looking at what’s in the best interest of me and my health.”
