Baker Mayfield Injury: History| Report| Update

Baker Mayfield was injured in the first quarter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

On first and goal from the 1-yard line, Mayfield took the snap and advanced in an attempt to reach the end zone. Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner wrapped him up and another defender pushed him off the front. The quarterback rolled on the turf just short of the goal line.

In this game it appeared that he took a low shot on his ankle and needed help off the field. Baker was writhing in pain and clutching his lower leg on the field, but was eventually able to get up and limp away.

Baker was also able to limp into the blue medical tent on his own, but Kyle Trask needed to come inside to finish the drive. What started as one of the best drives of the season – and one of the most promising – ended with Trask failing to reach the endzone and needing to kick a field goal.

Despite how bad it seemed, there was some good news. CBS reported from the sideline that Baker’s ankle was ‘heavily taped’ but he was expected to return to the game. He actually returned for the Bucs’ next offensive drive, proving once again how serious and tough he has been to the team throughout the season.

Report

Quarterback Baker Mayfield came out swinging on Tampa Bay’s first series on Sunday.

A right ankle injury changed everything.

After watching the Buccaneers miss a rare opportunity for an opening possession touchdown, Mayfield bravely returned. He missed only two offensive snaps before returning to the field to try to save the Bucs from an early 14-point deficit despite looking neither as efficient nor as effective after the injury.
“The ankle stuff is really not fun,” he said after the 27-20 loss at Indianapolis. “Not really sure what actually happened, I’ll have to watch the film. Didn’t feel great, but just got (trainer) Bobby (Slater) and the team to tape me back up as best they could. But tomorrow it will be very painful.”

Mayfield was hurt when the Bucs (4-7) called for a quarterback keeper on first-and-goal from the Colts 1-yard line. When the players stood up, a sore Mayfield was apparently unaware that Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner’s knee appeared to have pushed Mayfield’s leg awkwardly toward the turf.

It didn’t take long for things to go wrong.

Offensive lineman Aaron Stinney was called for a false start before Kyle Trask officially took his first snap. When the game restarted, Rachad White was stopped for a 2-yard gain and then Chris Godwin could not get the inbounds with both feet on a TD catch.

Update

Mayfield was injured on a quarterback sneak attempt from the 1-yard line in the first quarter of today’s game. He was on the field in pain and had to seek help from Tampa Bay’s medical staff.

While Mayfield was eventually able to leave the field, he was limping as he walked to the sideline. It appears that he has injured his right ankle. Mayfield was initially evaluated in the blue medical tent, but he soon passed out and began walking along the shore of Tampa Bay.

The CBS broadcast suggested that Mayfield was throwing passes on the sideline and appeared ready to re-enter the game when the Bucs got the ball back from the Indianapolis Colts.

Tampa Bay confirmed that news and Mayfield was back on the field when the Buccaneers started their next drive.
