Matthews was born in San Ramon, California, and relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, with his family when he was a baby. After growing up playing baseball and hockey, he became particularly interested in hockey after watching the Arizona Coyotes play.

On game days, the Maple Leafs’ younger players finally had their way with a more relaxed dress code, closer to business casual. This allows them to avoid the sport’s severe, but often required — even in minor hockey — jacket-and-tie policy.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward is now ready to return to the lineup after undergoing wrist surgery over two months ago, and will make his season debut against the New York Rangers on Monday.
