Austin Ekeler is back in the Washington Commanders’ plans for Week 4, but fantasy football managers should temper expectations as the veteran running back returns from a serious injury.
Washington signed Ekeler earlier in the week, and he traveled with the team to London for Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. With Rachaad White ruled out because of a shoulder injury, Ekeler has an opportunity to immediately step into a pass-catching role.
Austin Ekeler’s Week 4 Fantasy Outlook
Ekeler has not played since suffering an Achilles injury in Week 2 of last season, making his Week 4 return an important moment for both Washington and fantasy managers.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn indicated that Ekeler would be worked into the offense, but his workload is unlikely to resemble the heavy-touch role he had during his prime.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt is expected to continue handling much of Washington’s early-down work. The rookie has recorded 47 carries for 142 yards through three games, while Ekeler is better suited to the passing-game role that opened up with White unavailable.
That could make Ekeler particularly useful in PPR fantasy leagues.
Colts Matchup Gives Ekeler Some Upside
The matchup against Indianapolis also provides a reason for fantasy managers to consider Ekeler.
Through three games, the Colts have allowed 342 rushing yards, 131 receiving yards and four rushing touchdowns to opposing running backs. Indianapolis has surrendered the sixth-most fantasy points to the position during that span.
With Marcus Mariota expected to make his second start of the season because of Jayden Daniels’ injury, Washington could lean more heavily on short passes and checkdowns to its running backs.
That setup plays directly into Ekeler’s strengths.
However, fantasy managers should not expect a full workload immediately. After missing more than a year with an Achilles injury, Ekeler is likely to have his snaps monitored.
Is Austin Ekeler a Start or Sit in Week 4?
Ekeler is a flex option rather than an automatic starter in Week 4.
He has a safer fantasy floor than Isaiah Davis because of his receiving ability and the absence of Rachaad White. In a 12-team PPR league, Ekeler can be considered as a flex, particularly for managers dealing with injuries or bye-week problems.
Still, his uncertain snap count makes him difficult to trust as a standard RB2.
A reasonable expectation is for Ekeler to contribute primarily as a receiving and change-of-pace back while Croskey-Merritt handles much of the early-down workload.
Austin Ekeler vs. Isaiah Davis
Fantasy managers choosing between Ekeler and Jets running back Isaiah Davis should lean toward Ekeler for Week 4.
Davis became relevant after Breece Hall was ruled out with a quad injury. Braelon Allen is expected to handle the majority of New York’s rushing workload, while Davis could see change-of-pace opportunities against Chicago.
The problem for Davis is volume. Allen could receive 16 or more touches, leaving Davis with a smaller share of the offense.
Ekeler, meanwhile, has a clearer path to targets because White is inactive.
Ekeler’s Long-Term Fantasy Value
The bigger concern for Ekeler is what happens when White returns.
White’s shoulder injury is not expected to keep him out for an extended period, meaning Ekeler’s role could shrink once the veteran returns. Washington is also expected to continue using Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen in its running-back rotation.
That makes Ekeler more of a short-term fantasy option than a long-term starter.
For Week 4, he is worth considering in deeper leagues and as a PPR flex. But once White is cleared to return, fantasy managers may need to reassess Ekeler’s value.
Final Fantasy Football Verdict
Austin Ekeler is a low-end flex play with PPR appeal in Week 4. His return from an Achilles injury creates some uncertainty, but Rachaad White’s absence gives him a favorable opportunity to contribute immediately.
Week 4 recommendation: Start Ekeler as a flex in deeper 12-team leagues, especially PPR formats. Keep expectations modest because of his likely limited workload.
Long-term outlook: Isaiah Davis has more staying power while Breece Hall remains sidelined, while Ekeler’s fantasy value could decline once Rachaad White returns.
