Despite the aura of greatness surrounding Nunes – there are few brave bookies willing to stand against him in every fight. “The Lioness” is a major physical presence at 135, but may slow down if her opponents survive the championship round, during which she catches up and turns into a wet blanket on top for the duration.
Talentwise appears to be on the low end of Pena Nunes’ title challengers’ run. He’s not responsible defensively, on the feet or on the mat, and his cardio doesn’t stand out either.
Still, if Pea can survive the first 10 minutes against Nunes, she’ll be in the face of the champion and make the bout surprisingly competitive.
Pea needs to pick up a pace and force Nunes to act quickly and often, even as Pea is turning her back into the cage where she is forced to defend. As long as Pea can stay out of trouble with big power shots and work Nunes, she has her way to victory late in the fight as Nunes becomes more exhausted which she is forced to grapple with.
I suspect that Pea (2.5 takedowns per 15 minutes, 53% accuracy) could get Nunes (84% takedown defense) to the mat early, but tying him to the clincher and attempting to wear it on might have some success later. Is. War.
Submission
Juliana Pea swore she would. She swore that she would put on double champion Amanda Nunes the greatest performance of all time. No one believed him further.
Then she went out and did exactly that.
Pea (11-4) created the biggest upset in mixed martial arts history on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena as he defeated Nunes (21-5) in the second round of his bantamweight title match. The finale took place at 3 minutes, 26 seconds, when Pea hit Nunes on the leg, grounded him, carried him on his back and locked him in a rear-naked choke.
“I told you,” said Pena. “Never doubt me again… He tapped and I asked the commission, ‘Is it over?’ He said, ‘Yes, you have won.’ It [didn’t seem] real. It sounds crazy. But I expected to win. The world is my oyster. You have the potential to do anything in this life.”

Both women come off the stereotype and Pea is stomping a ton, making it clear she’s going to wrestle quick.
Nunes knocks Pea down with a calf kick but Pea comes back up and Nunes quickly looks like a hunter. Pea throws some combos at Nunes. No one gets off but she is showing a willingness to exchange and as soon as she steps, Pea falls.
Pea’s eyes are clear and it looks like a slip but Nunes stands up and looks for an opening to let in. She does but Pea scuffles and is now on a double against the fence. However Nunes tosses him and how he tops Pea against the fence.
Pea moves on but Nunes bothers her and now Nunes is on the back and she is trying to feed a choke. Pea is fighting Off Hand and she makes enough room to turn around and claim the Half-Guard. Now Pea tries to roll up on a single but Nunes holds her head. Nunes doesn’t really want to punish Pea with this situation and it’s a clear victory for Pea. Though we’ll see how long it lasts.
