Why did retire:

Ali Marpet, who helped protect Tom Brady during Tampa’s Super Bowl title in the 2020 season, has announced his retirement at the age of 28.

The left guard, who is in the prime years of his career and was named to the Pro Bowl last season, confirmed the surprise decision on Instagram on Sunday. ESPN reported the decision was down to health concerns.

“I can’t say enough about what Ali has meant to our team over the three seasons since my arrival. He has been the consummate professional and has been a rock for us in the interior of our offensive line,” Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said in a statement.

“We will miss him on the field and in the locker room, but I am happy that he gets to go out as a Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowler. It is never easy saying goodbye to a player who has meant so much to our success, but I support and respect his decision and wish him a great life after football.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

The Bucs already face the daunting challenge of replacing future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. Filling the void left by Marpet, who missed just 12 games in seven seasons, will be another big challenge.

Marpet was due to make $10 million in 2022.
