Pujols and the Cardinals have agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million, according to a person with direct knowledge of the contract awarded to Bob Nightingale of USA Today Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was yet to be finalised.

The St. Louis Dispatch and Athletic were the first to report the deal.

Pujols played for the Cardinals from 2001–11. He was the 2001 NL Rookie of the Year, and then won three National League MVP awards. Pujol was also an important part of the teams that won two World Series titles (2006 and 2011) in St. Louis.

Pujols signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels in 2012 and spent more than nine seasons with the team before its release on May 13, 2021. Four days later, he signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
