Will play week 4
After another limited practice on Wednesday, Jones is officially “questionable” for Thursday night’s game against Detroit.
After limited practice last Thursday and Friday, it appeared Sunday morning that Jones (hamstring) would be cleared to play against the Saints, but the Packers ultimately decided he was not ready to go. The estimate is that he was “limited” in practice on Monday and Tuesday, and early expectations are that he will play on Thursday night against Detroit. WR Romeo Doubs apparently said as much after practice on Tuesday, and QB Jordan Love also indicated Jones will be there.
Jones has only played two and a half quarters this year, but he still has an impressive 127 total yards and two TDs. To put it in perspective, AJ Dillon has thrown for 132 total yards without a score despite leading the Packers in the last two-plus games. If Jones is out Dillon will once again be a volume-based flex, but clearly, his ceiling is lower.
Is playing tonight
We probably won’t know until Thursday afternoon. The low turnover makes it additional difficult to evaluate the timeline of the injury. If this were Sunday’s game, I would be more confident about Jones returning to the field, but at this point, I’d put it around 72/25 that he plays.
It’s worth pointing out that the Packers have A.J. Backup is enabled. Dillon, which means LaFleur can ease Jones back into the lineup. However, the fact that Green Bay will be without two starters on the left side of the offensive line, tackle David Bakhtiari and guard Elgton Jenkins, may put Jones at additional risk of taking a hit in the backfield.
Injury update
ESPN’s Fantasy Football Week 4 Injury Tracker, which includes a bunch of injury updates for the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends whose teams are scheduled to play this week. Here we’ll track practice reports, injury updates, and any other news that may impact a player’s short-term or long-term availability.
While the potential returns of Jones and Watson would provide impetus for an inconsistent offense, missing Bakhtiari – again – could be a big problem against Detroit’s Aiden Hutchinson. The reigning NFC Defensive Player of the Week had two sacks in three games this season and two sacks and an interception in two games against Green Bay last season.
However, given how dreadful the rushing attack has been over the course of three games and the strength of the opponent, Jones’ importance cannot be overstated.
Jones had nine carries in Week 1 at Chicago before suffering a hamstring injury, ranking the Packers 26th in rushing average at 3.43 yards per carry. The Lions’ defense ranked fifth allowing 3.18 yards per carry.
Bolstered by his two big catches against the Bears, Jones is averaging 11.5 yards per touch, compared to Patrick Taylor’s 4.3, AJ Dillon’s 3.1 and Emmanuel Wilson’s 2.8.
