Matthew Charles Eberflus (born May 17, 1970) is an American professional football coach who is the head coach of the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021 and as the linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys, and has coached at Toledo and Missouri.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has an explanation for the clock management at the end of the team’s 23-20 Thanksgiving Day loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Bears had a chance to tie or win the game in the final minute, but they missed the final 34 seconds and only got an incomplete pass off-kilter. During his postgame press conference, Eberflus told reporters the play was to snap the ball with 18 seconds left, use a timeout and then kick a field goal.

He pointed to the team’s need to work together more efficiently on the issue.

“I think we handled it the right way,” the Bears coach told reporters (2:30). “I believe we replayed the play, got it in bounds and called a timeout. That’s why we called it, it didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.”

Around 5:18, Eberflus said accountability starts with him and he has to be better.

The Bears were on third-and-26 on the Lions’ 41-yard line with 34 seconds remaining after Williams’ sack. They had a timeout remaining but were hoping to get a few extra yards to help kicker Cairo Santos’ chances of hitting a game-tying field goal.
