Update
A former professional football player was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in their Las Vegas apartment in April 2019.
The sentencing came after former NFL and Canadian Football League standout Sierra Wood reached a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in April, court records show.
Wood, 33, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder charge. Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth also ordered him to serve between 28 months and six years on the child abuse charge. He will have to serve his sentence continuously.
According to a copy of the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the remaining felony counts of child abuse they initially filed against Wood. They entered what is known as an Alford plea, a formal admission of guilt in criminal court that allows the defendant to still claim innocence.

Guilty
Former running back Cierra Wood, who spent time with five NFL teams and three CFL teams, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of a five-year-old girl in 2019.
Via the Associated Press, Wood reached an agreement in April to plead guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse. He will be eligible for parole after 10 years.
He will also have to serve a sentence of between 28 months and six years on child molestation charges. The punishments will run continuously.
Technically, Wood entered what is known as an Alford plea, which counts as an admission of guilt but allows him to maintain his innocence.
The child’s mother, Amy Taylor, separately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
