Michael Elko (born July 28, 1977) is an American college football coach who is the head coach at Texas A&M University. He was previously the defensive coordinator for Texas A&M from 2018 until his hiring by Duke on December 10, 2021, and then until his departure from Duke and hiring by Texas A&M on November 26, 2023.

Texas AM has hired Duke’s Mike Elko as its next football coach, the school announced Monday. The former Aggies defensive coordinator has emerged as the top choice, sources tell CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd a day after a pending deal between Texas A&M and Kentucky coach Mark Stoops reportedly fell apart.
“Coach Mike Elko is one of the best leaders and coaches in college football and has had high-level success at every stop of his career,” said Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork. “He is recognized in the coaching world as one of the best defensive minds in the country and has shown his ability to lead and turn a program around as a Power 5 head coach.”
Elko, 46, quickly became a favorite among the Texas A&M faithful after a highly successful stint with the Aggies as defensive coordinator under former coach Jimbo Fisher. He came to Texas A&M as part of Fisher’s starting staff in 2018 after successful stints at Wake Forest and Notre Dame. Under his watch, the Aggies defense ranked among the best units in the country, especially against the run.
During his tenure as defensive coordinator, Texas A&M went 34–14, capped by a 9–1 Orange Bowl campaign in 2020. The Aggies also began recruiting at an elite level, during which they were particularly effective when it came to locking down standout prospects on the defensive side of the ball.
The longtime defensive coordinator takes over at Duke in 2022. In his first season, Elko led the Blue Devils to an impressive 9–4 campaign, their best finish since 2014. Despite this, he posted a record of 7-5 in 2023. Tackling the major issues at the quarterback position.
After Elko left Texas A&M, the Aggies went just 12–12 over the next two seasons. Fisher was fired earlier this month just 10 games into his sixth season. Elko is now tasked with guiding Texas A&M back into SEC contention as the league heads into the 2024 season.

Elko has been the head coach at Duke for the past two seasons, helping the team to back-to-back bowl games. He served as the Texas A&M defensive coordinator and safeties coach from 2018 to 2021, assisting the team with four straight bowl trips and a 34–14 overall record.

Information about the length of Elko’s contract and how much she will be paid was not immediately available, but it will require approval from the Texas AM University System Board of Regents.

Elko, who grew up in South Brunswick, New Jersey, graduated from South Brunswick High School in 1995, where he played baseball, basketball, and was quarterback for the school’s football team. He was recognized by the Greater Middlesex Conference coaches as the league’s top quarterback in 1994 and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played for the Penn Quakers football team that won the Ivy League championship in 1998.
