Mark Thomas Stoops (born July 9, 1967) is an American college football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at the University of Kentucky, a position he has held since the 2013 season. Stoops is the all-time winningest head coach in the history of the Kentucky Wildcats football program.

Wife

Stoops is the younger brother of former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, former Arizona head coach and current Kentucky assistant Mike Stoops and the eldest of the brothers is Ron Jr., who was an assistant coach at Youngstown State. Stoops and his wife Chantel have two sons, Will and Zach. On January 4, 2021, the couple announced they would be divorcing

Coach Mark Stoops and his wife Chantel are divorcing, according to a release. Here’s what the statement said:

“It is very difficult to make an announcement about something that is so personal to our family, however, after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the statement read. “We realize that we are well-known within the community and feel that we need to acknowledge it publicly. We have deep care and respect for each other and that will continue as our family grows. Please respect our family’s privacy during this time.

Stoops has been at Kentucky since 2013. Their overall record is 49-50.

Coaching record

Although he did not specifically mention Texas A&M, Stoops said in his social media post that he “was contacted about a potential opportunity this weekend.”

Texas A&M has been conducting a coaching search since firing Jimbo Fisher two weeks ago, but sources confirmed to ESPN’s Pete Thamel that the Aggies will not hire Stoops.

Texas AM (7-5, 4-4 SEC) played its final two games under interim head coach Elijah Robinson, who is widely considered a candidate for the full-time job. The Aggies lost to No. 14 LSU in Saturday’s regular season finale.

Kentucky (7-5, 3-5 SEC) is headed to a bowl game for a school-record eighth consecutive season under Stoops. The last time Kentucky enjoyed at least eight consecutive winning seasons was from 1946 to 1956.

Stoops, 56, is the winningest coach in Kentucky football history with a career record of 73-64 and is currently under contract through the 2031 season.

If Stoops had moved to the Aggies, he would have replaced one of his former bosses: Stoops coached under Jimbo Fisher for three seasons (2010–12), before being hired as UK’s coach in December 2012. Buyout

Kentucky would have to pay a $4 million buyout if Stoops leaves UK this offseason. His UK contract, which runs through the 2030 season, makes him the seventh-highest paid coach in college football at $9 million per year. There was some question about whether Texas A&M would match that salary because Aggies athletic director Ross Bjork previously said their next coach’s contract included a large upfront guarantee rather than a heavy incentive to reward wins.
