Syracuse

Syracuse, NY — A 44-year-old Syracuse man who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in a murder-suicide Tuesday night had an active warrant for his arrest at the time of the shooting, according to the DA.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said Thursday that Michael Brantley was wanted for violating a protection order that 21-year-old Karisma Smith had taken against him.

Smith’s mother Mahogany Gaddis said that Smith obtained an order of protection after Brantley’s harassment escalated when Smith ended their relationship.

FanGraphs’ Jeff Sullivan recently took a deep dive into Michael Brantley’s leap for MVP nominee; Here is the link for the full story.

one piece:

Between last year and this year, Michael Brantley has taken a huge step forward. But he was already making progress for several seasons, and now he is reaping the benefits of discipline and controlled aggression. Brantley is still able to drop a single or double to the left or left-center. He is more capable than ever to turn the fastball and put it in the seats of the right field. Nothing dramatic here. There is no swing overhaul. There is no adjusted stance. Brantley always had skill. Now he just has to figure out how to put them all together the right way. The result has been a man dismissing Miguel Cabrera.
Brantley hit two walk-off homers this season to defeat the Tigers (starting the tribe’s opponent’s sweep) on May 19 and Texas on August 2.

The boy has been doing well.

Little is known about the seemingly private individual, Houston Astros’ wife Melissa Brantley, except fielder Michael Brantley. A 2015 report in Sports Illustrated noted that one of Michael’s children was his 8-year-old stepson, indicating that Melissa’s eldest son is from a previous relationship. Multiple sources, including Players Wives, claim that Melissa is a stay-at-home mom devoted to her children, but she occasionally celebrates their achievements with her husband at public events. When the MLB player was named an All Star in 2018, she and her three eldest children appeared to support her husband and father.

After starring for Central High School in Fort Pierce, Florida, the Milwaukee Brewers selected Brantley in the seventh round of the 2005 MLB Draft. During the 2008 season, the Brewers traded him to the Indians for pitcher CC Sabathia, among other prospects. Brantley made his MLB debut with the Indians in 2009.

During the 2014 campaign, Brantley won both an MLB All-Star nomination and a Silver Slugger Award for the first time. That year, he achieved career heights in several offensive categories and placed third in the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award voting. He was subsequently named to four consecutive All-Star squads between 2017 and 2021,  and finished in the top ten in batting average six times in the AL. He appeared in two World Series, both as a member of the Astros.
