Draft projection
Wide receivers showed their momentum Thursday as the NFL Scouting Combine opened in Indianapolis. Baylor prospect Tyquan Thornton stood out from the group and nearly set an alliance record.
Thornton clocked an official time of 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Initially, his time was announced as 4.21 seconds, which would have set a combined record for the fastest 40-yard dash, breaking Washington receiver John Ross III’s mark of 4.22 seconds from 2017.
He unofficially held the record for just over two hours after his time was first posted. The NFL later announced 4.28 seconds as Thornton’s official time.

The 2022 class of wide receivers is posting a truly impressive 40 times in the NFL Combine. One member of the group appears to have broken the all-time record.
Baylor’s wide receiver Tyquan Thornton posted an unofficial time of 4.21. If verified, it would set a new combine record ahead of the 4.22 John Ross ran in 2017.
Speed is not the only requirement to make a good career. Ultimately, Ross turned out to be a draft bust, despite his record 40 times. That said, it’s a great way to get attention, and Thornton, a former track athlete, is certainly helping his case with that kind of trail.
Thornton caught 62 passes for 948 yards and ten touchdowns in his final season at Baylor. He was seen as a consensus on the day of the three draft picks coming to the combine.
Scouting report
Baylor Sr. had a year to remember in 2021, and also landed on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. Thornton saved his best season for last, leading the Bears in receiving 62 catches for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns. He averaged 15.3 yards per reception and 2.6 yards per team passing effort, scoring a healthy 26.2% of goals. Both are a reflection of his proficiency when targeted.
Thornton’s most significant leap from one season to the next came from his freshman to sophomore year. This tells us what kind of player he is. Originally from Florida, Thornton came to the boiler in a very slim 149 pounds. While he recorded 354 yards and 3 TDs over 20 receptions as a freshman, he was too short, and he knew it.
Thornton was a completely different player in what turned out to be his first breakout campaign in 2019. He more than doubled his total, running in 45 receptions for 782 yards while playing with Denzel Mims.
