US champion figure skater Nathan Chen apologized for the gay comments he made on a podcast this week, where he discussed his frustrations at dealing with stereotypes “as a straight male athlete… Gay-dominated games, or LGBTQ-dominated games.”

“I recently did an interview where I was asked if people ever ask me why I don’t play hockey because of the assumption that skating bid-unquote is feminine and hockey is coat-unquote masculine. I asked the question and I want to apologize for that,” Chen said in a video statement on Twitter.

I don’t know which podcast chain the 22-year-old commented on, but a user on Twitter saved it on his phone before podcasters reportedly took it off YouTube.

Nathan Chen is an American by nationality, but of Chinese descent. He has spoken about his ethnicity before, telling ESPN: “There are a lot of cultural differences between Americans and Chinese, and I think having both aspects of my life helped me in many ways from an academic standpoint. The athletics approach.”

The 22-year-old entered the free skate section with a lead of 5.85 points thanks to his record-breaking short schedule. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama took the lead in Chen’s skate after defeating her. Chen needed 196.09 points in his free skate to win the gold, and he blew it to a major victory with a score of 218.63.

While performing for Elton John’s “Rocket Man”, Chen was out of this world. His routine consisted of five quads, including three in a row to start the performance, as well as a triple axle and a triple lutz and triple toe loop combination. Chen made full use of his elements, earning him an impressive technical score of 121.41.

Chen returned from a disappointing performance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, which included a personal best in the short program during the team event, a record-breaking short program in the individual event, and a win-free skate.

Along with one gold, Chen now has three Olympic medals in three different varieties. He previously earned a bronze in the team event in 2018 and started the 2022 Winter Olympics with a silver medal in the team event.
