Nathan Chen is a rocket man – and an Olympic champion.

The 22-year-old American earned gold in the men’s singles figure skating competition at the 2022 Winter Games. She won the title with a total of 332.60 points, giving her a 22.55-point victory over Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama. 2018 silver medalist Shoma Uno gave Japan its second representative on the podium by winning the bronze medal.

Chen earned a record score of 113.97 in the short program on Monday, giving him a 5.85-point lead over Kagiyama in second place. Kagiyama overtook Chen in the free skate and posted the day’s best score – until Chen took the ice.

Kagiyama was the first skater to cross the 200 mark in free skate, achieving a score of 201.93. With Elton John playing throughout the Capitol Indoor Stadium, Chen delivered and dominated the final performance of the event. A score of 196.09 was required to take the top spot, with the judges giving Chen a huge score of 218.63 for her free skate.

In his final practice before skating for an Olympic gold medal, Nathan Chen made sure to take in the moment.

He stood alone on the edge of the rink in Beijing on Thursday, watching the stands and the arena and the Olympic rings at every turn. Unlike the 2018 Winter Games, when he finished fifth overall, he was soaking in the experience of competing in the Olympics, winning or losing.

And with that newfound praise, and a well-deserved rush of joy, Chen won. He was the last skater to perform in the free skate, and the entire Olympic arena held his breath when he performed for the Elton John medley. Every time he made a quadruple jump, his cheers erupted. There was applause with every triple jump.

Chen is nicknamed “The Quad King” because of his ability to perform the quadruple jump. Chen is the first skater to have performed five types of quadruple jumps in competition – toe loop, salco, loop. , Flip, and Lutz – as well as have made eight quadruple jumps in one competition (2018 World Championships).  Since finishing fifth at the 2018 Winter Olympics, he has been undefeated in every competition he has entered, both domestically and internationally, as of October 2021. As of 2022, Chen is the world record holder for the short event,  the free skate, and the combined score.
