West Ham v Manchester United, match in pictures
Good afternoon and welcome to the live coverage of West Ham’s Carabao Cup clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
West Ham entered the match three days after a heart-wrenching loss to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, but they can take a lot of positives in one performance.
Both teams are expected to make several changes from Sunday’s starting XI, with the likes of Alex Krall and Alphonse Arriola making minor changes to get their hammer debuts.
Former hammer Jesse Lingard got the winner over the weekend and the England international is expected to begin this evening.
You can follow all the action from this afternoon’s game, along with the football, below. West Ham writer Tom Clark of London.
West Ham United have knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup.
Like the dramatic Premier League match between the two sides on Sunday, it was an exciting game at Old Trafford despite a lot of changes made by both managers.
The Hammers once again took the lead in the opening round, this time by Manuel Lanzini at home from a cut-back from Ryan Frederick, but unlike in the weekend, there was no return for United.
Juan Mata, Jadon Sancho, Diogo Dalot and Mason Greenwood all had equal chances and there should have been a penalty in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s favor when Mark Noble pulled down Jesse Lingard.
But West Ham remained firm as in the second half and should have extended the lead when Andrey Yarmolenko hit the post with an open goal for the goal and Mark Noble could only make a similar effort on Dean Henderson when the face-off. With the goalkeeper.
In the end, it didn’t matter as United were not able to defend themselves and are now ruled out of the tournament. Solskjaer’s wait for the trophy continues.
Transfer News
Manchester United suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Courtney Hodge scored a late header in the 88th minute to give the visitors the lead, before accepting a penalty for handling Edinson Cavani’s header.
Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball and put it ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, and blew the ball over the bar as United were beaten for the third time in four games and the second consecutive home game in all competitions.
Fernandes took to social media to apologize long after the final whistle with a lengthy statement, but United will have to put it back before Wednesday’s Champions League match against Villarreal.
In transfer news, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly keen to sign 23-year-old RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukhile.
The French international’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season, so United could potentially draw on a cut-price deal next summer to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a spot at right-back.
