Injury
Williamson’s injury was the most notable, not only because of his injury history but the way it happened. Late in the fourth quarter, he broke free on the fastbreak, looking like it was going to be a Showtime dunk. Instead, Jordan Clarkson came out of nowhere for an incredible block.
The force of Clarkson’s block threw Williamson off balance, and he fell on his back to the floor. Williamson did not return to the game, as the Pelicans used a 17-point return to force an extra frame before losing on a last-second shot by Kelly Olinek.
It is unclear how much time Williamson will lose after this one game, but given his long injury history, the Pelicans will certainly be cautious in handling it. Before being ruled out of the game against the Jazz, Williamson was already up to 25 points, six rebounds and two blocks. During the first three games of the season, he averaged 22 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists, and returned to his bulldozing manner whenever he headed downhill toward the rim.
When Williamson was healthy, the Pelicans looked like a threat in the Western Conference. But if he has to lose some time, it will derail this team’s early season success.

Injury update 2022
Zion Williamson was not able to finish Sunday’s game against the Utah Jazz at home after he reportedly suffered a posterior hip injury, according to ESPN’s Andrew Lopez.
Williamson apparently picked up the injury in a scary fall while trying to finish a dunk in the fourth quarter. The former Duke Blue Devil seemed to be on his way to a mighty jam on a breakaway, but he was not able to completely avoid Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson who challenged Williamson’s shot.
Zion Williamson landed hard on his back, and how his position is up in the air for the Pelicans’ next game. Before being knocked out of the competition, Williamson already had 25 points shooting 10-of-16 from the field, which included six rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist in 30 minutes of action. The Pelicans also probably played it safe with Williamson opting not to force him back into the game.
Zion Williamson missed the entire 2021-22 NBA season with a foot injury, so Pelicans fans must have held their breath watching him hit the floor with such intensity.
While there are no detailed updates on Williamson’s condition, as of this writing, it doesn’t look like he’s faced anything serious enough to sideline him for several games.
The Pelicans, who lost to the Jazz 122-121 in overtime, will have a full day of rest on Monday before taking to the floor again on Tuesday against Luka Doncic at home and the Dallas Mavericks.
