In his other pitches, Wheeler uses his curveballs and changeups to complement the fastball and slider. [74] He considers the curveball to be “civilised”, and believes that his control over the pitch, which he has been throwing since high school, has diminished with the continuous improvement of his slider. In contrast, his change is a recent pitch, which Wheeler began throwing in the 2014 season to give batsmen a tough fastball. [76] His slider is his least developed pitch, and Wheeler expressed a desire to improve the stability of the pitch ahead of the 2021 season and “make it look like a strike instead of … being like a useless pitch”. [77]

Wheeler and his wife Dominic have one child together. Their son, Wesley Wheeler, was born on July 20, 2020, shortly before the start of the pandemic-short 2020 MLB season.[78]

Wheeler has a close friendship with retired Atlanta Braves player Chipper Jones. The two are introduced when Jones’ agents kick Wheeler out of high school.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler put on a strong performance, but came up short in the National League Cy Young voting.

Corbin Burns, right-hander of the Milwaukee Brewers, was the winner.

In a close vote by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, Burns won over Wheeler and Max Shazer of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The results were declared on Wednesday night.

Burns took first place with 12 votes, 14 seconds and 3 thirds to finish with 151 points.

Wheeler also took first place with 12 votes, 9 seconds and 4 thirds to finish with 141 points.

Scherzer received 6 first places, 5 seconds and 13 thirds of the vote to finish with 113 points.

Wheeler is the Phillies’ third Cy Young runner-up, alongside Roy Halladay in 2011 and Jim Bunning in 1967.

Wheeler’s case was built around his workload. He led the majors with 213⅓ innings, finished first in the NL with 247 strikes and was fifth in the ERA (2.78) and WHIP (1.01). He played six innings in 27 of his 32 innings.

Scherzer went 15-4 with 2.46 ERA in 30 starts (179⅓ innings) for the Nationals and Dodgers. He led the majors with a micro 0.864 WHIP and went 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 11 starts for the Dodgers. The Dodgers won all 11 games. The performance was not good enough to get the 37-year-old right-handed batsman the fourth Cy Young award.

Burns, who turned 27 in October, won despite making only 28 starts and playing 167 innings. The Brewers sometimes employed six-man rotations and Burns also missed a few starts while in COVID protocol.
