In December 2019, the Philadelphia Phillies rolled the dice on a $118 million contract with former New York Mets right-hander Jack Wheeler. Two years later, Wheeler has terminated his contract altogether.

In his two seasons with the club, particularly this season, Wheeler has established himself as a Phillies ace. This was extended after a spectacular full-game shutout against his former Mets team on August 8.

There was a time when the New York Mets’ youth starting rotation was the envy of all Major League Baseball. Matt Harvey was known to Mets fans as “The Dark Knight”, Jacob DeGrome was a budding star, and some named Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz were quickly coming in the pipeline. But it was Jack Wheeler, the sixth overall draft pick by the San Francisco Giants, who probably had the highest expectations. Wheeler was acquired by the Mets in a 2011 trade that sent center fielder Carlos Beltrán to the West Coast, and going into the 2012 season, Wheeler was the team’s No. 1 prospect according to Fangraph, ahead of both Harvey and DeGrom.

The dream rotation for the Mets never quite materialized, and it wasn’t until 2018 that those five pitchers finally took a full turn. By that point, Wheeler had missed the entirety of the 2015 and 2016 seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery, and his first action on a big league mound in 2017 wasn’t great. That year, he pitched for a 5.21 earned run average and 5.03 fielding-independent pitching mark, good for just 0.2 fangraph wins over replacements, before being closed with a stress reaction in August.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zack Wheeler took a 5/1/3 innings on Thursday, scoring one for seven, and allowed six hits for three earned runs in the Phillies’ 9-7 win over the Dodgers.

Wheeler made no decision on Thursday as his bullpen nearly blew up the game in the eighth inning, leaving the Dodgers back. The starting pitcher has an ERA of 4.26 and is eligible for rostering, but is still looking to return to his elite form in 2021 in which he had an ERA of 2.78.
