McEwen played minor midget hockey with the Ponal Red Devils before joining the Charlottetown Islanders in 2012–13. After two seasons with the Amherst Ramblers as a free agent, McEwen signed with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). In his first full season with the team, MacEwen recorded 40 points in 66 regular season games. He attended the Anaheim Ducks training camp prior to the 2016–17 season, but was returned to the QMJHL. A harsh power forward that does not do any one thing to a particularly outstanding degree, but does the little things right. He skates well, albeit not with the balance or agility of an elite skater. He has a nose for the net and a quick release on his shot. Activates defensively and performs difficult backchecks. Wins most of his puck battles, but should be a little more consistent in his physical assertions. He must work on his vision, awareness on the ice, and become more confident as he continues to grow.
