Griddy

The crisis continued for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson wasted no time making an impact in the game. He started the game with 60 yards at the start of the second quarter with four for six. Wilson caught a TD pass from wide receiver Braxton Berios that completely fooled the defense. To celebrate, Wilson followed the example of many NFL players today and hit his best griddy.

Wilson was ruled out for the first three weeks of the season after suffering a knee injury during the preseason. The score put the Jets up 10-0 on the Steelers as New York looks to lead the season 2-2. This creativity from the Jets’ offense is a good indication of the versatility that Wilson brings when he is at the center. The play is commonly referred to as the Philly Special after the Philadelphia Eagles pulled it off in their Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots. With their success rate on this play, don’t be surprised if they go to the well again and Wilson grabs another TD this season.

The New York Jets used some trickery on Sunday to score a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers – their version of a Philly special.

2 to a second and on goal, quarterback Zach Wilson hands the ball to wide receiver Garrett Wilson on a jet sweep – a play he likes to use. Garrett Wilson, running to the left of the formation, flipped it to wide receiver Braxton Berios, who was approaching from the opposite direction. Berios tosses the ball towards wide-open Zack Wilson, who slips out of the backfield and into the end zone.

This gave the Jets a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

This was a great example of a coordinator (Mike LaFleur) fooling an opponent by going against a trend – a basic jet sweep.

It was the first touchdown reception of Wilson’s career and Berios’ first TD pass. The score was also the first touchdown catch by a Jets quarterback, although Mike White had a two-figure catch on a similar game against the Bengals last year.

“Conklin has emerged as the favorite target for both Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco at training camp and has been one of the biggest surprises on the offense. He’s athletic and sure-handed and good enough as a blocker that the Jets’ Will have a hard time taking him off the field.
