Cunningham attended Pinson Valley High School in Pinson, Alabama. During his high school football career, he had 448 tackles, including 194 as a senior. He committed to Vanderbilt University to play college football.
Highlights
After not playing during his first year at Vanderbilt in 2013, Cunningham played in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2014, recording 67 tackles and 1.5 sacks. As a redshirt sophomore in 2015, he played in all 12 games with nine starts. He finished the year with 103 tackles and 4.5 sacks and was named first team All-SEC.
In December 2016, Cunningham became the first unanimous All-American in Vanderbilt history, when he was named first team defensive All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.
Cunningham was the seventh Commodore to earn the consensus All-American honor for Vanderbilt. The last consensus All-American for Vanderbilt was punter Ricky Anderson in 1984.
Eagles
They already lost linebacker Davion Taylor for the foreseeable future. And fellow starter T.J. Edwards has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury in recent weeks. If any team was primed to sign a linebacker, it is the Philadelphia Eagles.
Enter Zach Cunningham. The Houston Texans released the stud linebacker on Wednesday, December 8 for disciplinary reasons. He was late for a COVID-19 test and left inactive in Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts. It was the second time this season that Cunningham violated team rules.
Off-the-field issues aside, the 26-year-old has been a tackling machine during his five-year NFL career. He has the second-most tackles for Houston in 2021 — behind only former Eagles cast-off Kamu Grugier-Hill — after leading the entire league with 164 tackles (106 solo) in 2020. The 57th overall pick from the 2017 draft is subject to waivers and any team can put in a claim for him.
News
The Houston Texans made an unexpected move, reportedly waiving linebacker and former NFL tackles leader Zach Cunningham on Wednesday.
This is surprising because Cunningham still has a little over two years left on his contract. The Texans signed him to a four-year, $58 million extension in Aug. 2020, just 16 months ago.
Cunningham, 26, has 67 total tackles in 2021, along with one forced fumble and three pass deflections.
