Yuzuru Hanyu (羽生, Han Yuzuru, born 7 December 1994) is a Japanese figure skater. He is a two-time Olympic champion (2014, 2018), two-time world champion (2014, 2017), four-time Grand Prix final champion (2013-2016), champion of the four continents (2020), 2010. World Junior Champion, 2009–10 Junior Grand Prix Final champion and six-time Japanese national champion (2012–2015, 2020–2021). He has also won medals at five other World Championships, receiving bronze medals in 2012 and 2021 and silver in 2015, 2016 and 2019 making him the only men’s singles skater with Jan Hoffmann to win seven World Championships medals in the post-war era.

Hole in ice
Fans were devastated after figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, the Ice Prince of Japan, missed the opening jump of his Olympic routine – a quadruple salcho.
The men’s figure skating defending champion, Hanyu, made an appearance in Beijing on Tuesday by skating in the men’s skating short event. However, he missed a planned quadruple salcho at the beginning of his performance, instead changing the complex jump to a solo salcho.
Speaking to the media after his skate, Hanyu told reporters that his skate got stuck in a small dent in the ice just before his planned jump.
But really, I didn’t mind anything,” Hanyu said. “I was saying (to myself) – well, it’s not working. So I just focused on the next part. I really like listening to music, and I love to skate to this music.”
Hanyu’s missed jump left him with a shockingly low score of 95.15 in the short event, a major blow to the two-time Olympic medalist who is looking to secure his third gold medal in Beijing. For context, Hanyu recently scored 111.31 during his Olympic qualifying skate at the Japanese Nationals.

However, Hanyu failed to fulfill his first element and Simon Reid on Eurosport commentary immediately emphasized the seriousness of the situation, saying: “No!”. I hit a hole when I took off,” Hanyu said. “I was on a hole so I couldn’t fly for the first jump.
“I thought, ‘Okay, this is ominous,’ and I just focused on the next part and I liked the music.”
The two-time Olympic champion would finish with a score of 95.15 after executing the quad toloop, triple toloop and triple axel but Simon Reed detailed the issue on commentary.
“There’s no coming back from what happened on that first jump,” Reid began. “He’s looking down at the snow.”
“Oh boy, he’s not going to retain his Olympic title – that’s for sure. Was it pressure? He never really succumbed to pressure but it was a huge mistake.”
