World Series Game 5: Highlights| Analysis| Result
A wonderful catch on the wall. A perfect pick on first base. A strike at a key position on a pitch that had not produced a blow only a few games earlier.
A night before, Astro had linked this World Series with history. But in a 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 5 on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park, they won with mystery. They didn’t need another no-hitter to put themselves on top of their second crown in six seasons, each time the home club threatened to seize the momentum, simply missing out on clever maneuvers and stealth.
Highlights
The Houston Astros took a three-game-to-two series lead on Thursday night with a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 5.
Astros starter Justin Verlander, who had come into the game in the last eight World Series with a 0-6 record and 6.07 ERA, allowed one run on four hits, scored four runs and scored six runs in five innings.
Janes from Citizens Bank Park: Astros hold off Phillies in Game 5, win World Series title
Game 6 is in Houston on Saturday.
Analysis
Justin Verlander had his best World Series debut ever, skipping that opening home run, slamming the brakes and holding the Phillies there for five full innings.
Once he made his way to the bullpen, Dusty Baker played the same plan he did in Game 4, asking each pitcher to get an inning for him. There was a moment of doubt when Monteiro was dismissed early and Ryan Pressley was asked to take the slack.
Pressley’s performance was outstanding, slamming the closed door at the thick end of the Phillies’ batting line-up.
Result
The Astros were the 3-2 winners on Thursday night and are up 3-2 in a best-of-seven series
The Houston Astros are one win away from the second World Series title in franchise history. The Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night (HOU 3, PHI 2) to give Houston a 3-2 lead in a best-of-seven series. Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7 will be played at Minute Maid Park this weekend.
In the first innings it appeared that Game 5 would be a chaotic game with lots of runs and lots of madness, but that chaos game never materialized. Game 5 turned out to be a half-pitchers duel, with lots of traffic and missed opportunities on both sides. Both the teams took 2 for 18 with the runners in the scoring position.
