As expected, the Wings selected No. 1 Texas center Charlie Collier. Although not like the franchise-changing talent we’ve seen in previous drafts, Collier has a WNBA-ready size and athleticism and is a talented scorer around the basket. The Wings needed the depth of the frontcourt, and Collier made the most sense. grade B

The Wings also had the No. 2 pick on Thursday night, and they went back to the frontcourt to take on 19-year-old elder Avak Kuir from Finland. Most American fans are probably not familiar with Cuire, but that will change quickly. He has a rare combination of size, athleticism and play, and has the highest potential of anyone in this class. grade A

McDonald was the biggest breakout star of the NCAA women’s tournament, but no one knew how high he would go in the draft. Is changed. It was at number 3 all the way. This is a surprise, considering Dream already has several small guards on the roster, but McDonald will give a big boost to his defense and allow Cheney Carter to play. off the ball. grade B-

The 6-foot-5 forward / center out of Texas is a versatile post player, finishing his junior season with 19.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 51.1% from the field. It would come as no surprise for a player who played a key role in Longhorn’s Sweet 16 to take on Maryland in the 2021 NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

A 19-year-old young man from Finland currently plays professionally for Vertus Irene Ragusa in Italy. After joining Ragusa in August last year, Kuir held his game against some of the WNBA’s best players, including 2019 Defensive Player of the Year Natasha Howard. He is set to become the first Finnish player in league history. The 6-foot-5 center, who was born in Cairo and moved to Finland with his family as a young child, has earned Defensive Player of the Year and two-time MV Candace Parker over the past season.

The Wings had three of the top five in the first round and came up with some dynamic players in each place. Collier was the biggest to come in the draft, and Dallas had an obvious need in the frontcourt, so taking him to No. 1 benefited the most. Collier selection was halted overall after selection with Finland center Avak Kuier at No. 2, adding even more depth to the paint. He participated in his original game with 14.3 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

The country of Finland, and standing at 6-4, would provide a matchup problem for most nights. He brings great athleticism to any of his size, has a comfortable feel for the game and doesn’t even scratch the surface of his potential at the age of 19.

It was the first big surprise of the night when Indiana Fever took West Virginia guard Saffron Gondrejic with the fourth overall pick. He lit up the scoreboard at West Virginia at an average of 17.4 points and played nearly four games, but he certainly didn’t need another guard with Kelsey and Tiffany Mitchell already on the roster. Gondrezic was rated as a second or third-round pick, so picking him this high is incredibly shocking.
