A popular Youth Tour supporter claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open on Sunday. It was a different Sunday than the bottom one at TPC Scottsdale.

With 67 finishes including a birdie in his final six holes, Scotty Schaeffler made a 26-foot birdie on the third playoff hole to beat Patrick Cantley to claim his much-anticipated maiden title.

En route to victory, Schaeffler passed 24-year-old rookie Sahit Thegala, who took a 54-hole lead and bogeyed the 17th hole and remained on top of the leader board for much of the afternoon until falling into a third-place tie. With Brooks Koepka and Xander Schöfel.

With the win, Schaeffler claimed first place prize money of $1.476 million, out of a total purse of $8.2 million. Here’s the prize money paid for each golfer who takes the deductible.

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour, folks. Just ask this week’s winner, Scotty Scheffler.

The 25-year-old Texan secured his first PGA Tour win in dramatic fashion at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open on Sunday after a three-hole playoff with Ryder Cup teammate and six-time winner Patrick Cantley. Playing the 18th hole at TPC Scottsdale for the fourth time that day, Schaeffler buried a birdie putt to take the top prize of $1,476,000 for being up-and-down from the fairway bunker. Cantley earned $893,800.

Scotty Scheffler posted 17 top-20 finishes in 70 career PGA Tour starts, including a pair of runner-up finishes, before securing his first win on Sunday at the WM Phoenix Open.

Schaeffler topped Patrick Cantley in the three-hole playoff at TPC Scottsdale and took the trophy and first place for nearly $1.5 million.

Playoff

The 25-year-old Texan put on a 26-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to defeat Patrick Cantley at the WM Phoenix Open and claim his first PGA Tour win.

“I’m glad it went in,” Scheffler said.

Listening to former Tour supporter-turned-CBS broadcaster Colt Knost to explain it, he always knew Scheffler was destined for greatness. He remembers standing knee-deep in front of him, a kid who couldn’t get enough practice at the Royal Oaks Golf Club in Dallas, where Tour winners like Justin Leonard, Hunter Mahan and Harrison Fraser were regulars.

“He just followed us around like a little puppy dog,” Nost recalled.

At the range, Schaeffler was known to fill the yellow pole from 70 to 90 yards, depending on where the tee was set that day.

Winner

The 2022 West Management Phoenix Open Finals leaderboard is led by the winner, winning a playoff PGA Tour win at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Patrick Cantley and Scotty Schaeffler ended regulation at 16-under 268, with both players not taking a close look at the birdie to close the tournament on the 72nd hole.

In the playoffs, both players tied twice on the par-4 18th hole. On the third and final playoff hole, Schaeffler pulled off a 26-foot birdie putt to claim the first PGA Tour title of his career.

Xander Schauffele, who similarly missed a close birdie putt on the 72nd hole, finished third at 15-under total with Brooks Koepka and 54-hole leader Sahit Thegala.
