The specifics of the alleged behaviour are unknown, but the Tofino Resort and Marina has announced that the remainder of the Race for the Blue tournament, which was scheduled to run from September 9 to September 17, has been cancelled.
It is unclear whether the behaviour involved Mitchell or other resort executives.
The resort continues to “take steps to ensure the absolute safety and well-being of our team,” according to a brief statement posted on the tournament website.
Obituary
Willie Mitchell, the house producer at Hi Records in the 1960s and 1970s who shaped the elegant yet gritty sound of Al Green, Ann Peebles, and other soul music stars, died Tuesday in Memphis, where he lived.
He was 81.
According to his son Lawrence, the cause was cardiac arrest.
The Willie Mitchell sound is instantly recognisable on records by singers like Mr. Green, Ms. Peebles, Syl Johnson, and O. V. Wright, as well as on instrumentals Mr. Mitchell recorded as a bandleader, with prominent horns, delicately strummed guitars, some sweet organ, and a steady, straightforward beat.
It became Hi’s signature sound as the label rose to prominence with Mr. Green in the 1970s, being both raw and sensual.
Soul Serenade
Mitchell was born in the small town of Ashland in north Mississippi and attended Rust College in nearby Holly Springs, where he studied trumpet.
His role models were jazzmen Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown, but his own path would be somewhat different.
Following army service, he moved to Memphis in 1954, where he led the orchestra at the Manhattan Club and the house band for the Home of the Blues label.
In 1961, he began working for Hi Records, an independent Memphis label that had made a name for itself in the jukebox market with funky instrumentals.
Mitchell had a few minor hits of his own in the 1960s with similar material, such as Buster Browne and Soul Serenade, and over the years would release more than a dozen albums.
