Playoff
In one of the strangest playoffs in recent PGA Tour memory, Will Zalatoris took advantage of the wildest break of them all to capture his long-awaited first PGA Tour victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championships on Sunday.
After two crucial playoff holes between Zalatoris and Sepp Straka, Zalatoris’ tee shot on the third extra hole – 151-yard, par-3 11th at TPC Southwind – barely took the water, bounced on the bank and then at least six More bounce on the rock retaining wall before settling between the wall and the rough.
With Straka washing his tee shot – when Zalatoris had put himself in a precarious position – and eventually lying four feet away, Zalatoris’s decision was made easy. But still he thought of playing the potentially impossible shot.
Instead, after some discussion with new caddy Joel Stock, Zalatoris went back to the drop zone, knocked a nail from 93 yards to 7 feet and rolled into the winning bogey putt.
The thrilling end followed a crazy second playoff hole, the par-4 18th, where Zalatoris’ drive sailed right, hit hard off the kart path and came to rest a few feet from the outside fence. Straka’s drive barely and almost went into the water before somehow stopping at the shore.
