Representing Trinity Christian Academy in suburban Dallas, Texas, Zalatoris joined the U.S. Academy in 2014. Won the junior amateur title. He attended Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and was named ACC Player of the Year in 2017.  He was also a member of the US Walker Cup team in 2017, teammates with future PGA Tour winners Colin Morikawa and Cameron Champ. He dropped out of school after his junior year to turn professional.

Zalatoris turned professional in 2018, but failed to pass the first leg of the Korn Ferry Tour Q School.  With no position in 2019, Zalatoris qualified and sponsors to play in the Korn Ferry Tour events on Monday. Relied on discounts. He secured membership for the remainder of the season on 7 July after a tie for third in the LECOM Health Challenge, and finished the regular season in 60th place, earning full status for the 2020 season.

Zalatoris’ first professional victory came in July 2020, when he won the TPC Colorado Championship by a blow. The victory made him the leader on the Korn Ferry Tour points list and the U.S. Championship in Winged Foot. Qualified for Open. US At the Open, he took the par-3 7th hole during the first round, almost six holes later,  and tied for sixth place with world number one Dustin Johnson, equaling five overs; It was his first top-10 finish in a major championship.  He then followed up with a T8 at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, and achieved Special Provisional Member status following the Bermuda Championship in early November.

But the 24-year-old, who looks to be a cross between Owen Wilson and Princess Diana, showed she has the star quality to become a leading figure on the big stage by finishing a shot behind winner Hideki Matsuyama.

Zalatoris, who finished 70 to finish at nine-under par, said: “It was an absolute dream to compete for the Masters. To be in a position, I’ve been dreaming about it for 20 years. I am

“It was a fun week. Coming a shot short is very motivating. I’m obviously looking forward to coming back in future years and hopefully a better one.”

The Greek-American already has quite the story in the tall, blonde country club.

Swing

Will Zalatoris is a breath of fresh air. It’s heartening to see a young player untainted by the stress and tension of PGA Tour-level golf has such an unmistakable joy for the game (like we all had kids when). My guess is that Zalatoris’ infectious passion, attitude and skill will bring a ton of new young players to the game, just as Ricky Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods did before him.

I caught Zalatoris in action at RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island after finishing runner-up at the 2021 Masters. Not only does he have “swagger,” he has the game to match. Long, tight and lean, his swing is a study in matching your speed to your frame and getting the most out of it.

Putter

This has always been an interesting proposition. What if Will Zalatoris, the Tour’s best iron player ever, warmed up with his traditionally balky putter?

We saw this on Thursday in Southern Hills. Zalatoris made 150 feet of bars and vaulted onto the front page of the leaderboard. It was only a bogey on the 18th hole that took Zalatoris’ four-under 66 past opening leader Rory McIlroy (65).

Zalatoris ended the round receiving a mind-numbing 3.431 strokes on the greens (for reference, he loses about half a stroke per round on average this season), and after his round, he conceded the most recent stroke he was doing. Told about the work that makes it possible. ,

“I got into some bad habits,” he says. “I’ve worked very hard on this in the last three, four days.”
