Alabama’s football team will sport a sticker honoring former Mississippi State coach Mike Leach during Saturday’s Sugar Bowl. Today we will discuss about What are the stickers on college football helmets?

What are the stickers on college football helmets?

Helmet stickers, also known as reward stickers and pride stickers, are stickers placed on the helmets of high school or college football players. They can denote either individual or team achievements.

Teams allow players to earn distinctive stickers on their helmets. This means football stars can get stickers for touchdowns, receiving or rushing yards. Even defensive players can earn stickers based on the number of tackles, sacks, and interceptions they make.

In some cases, special team achievements are also likely to have stickers on their helmets. When a player on a certain team has more, it is usually an indication of being in form based on previous games.

ESPN says the practice of awarding helmet stickers is often erroneously credited to Ernie Biggs, also an athletic trainer at Ohio State under legendary coach Woody Hayes. Instead they claim that the practice of giving out stickers began with former assistant coach Jim Young at Miami in 1965, two years before they were used by the Buckeyes.
