Rory McIlroy is the highest ranked player in the world at number 7. … This is the final week for players to qualify for the PGA Championship through a special funding list that began a year ago. The top 70 are assured of a spot in the southern hills, although the area is likely to take more to fill. … The last tournament at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms was the Quicken Loans National in 2014, won by Francesco Molinari, who is on the field this week. … playing Tony Finau. He is coming off his ninth runner-up spot, which has brought him back into the world’s top 20 at number 18. … playing Ricky Fowler. He has missed five of his eight cuts this year and is yet to finish in the top 40. Fowler is already eligible for the PGA Championship by finishing top-15 a year ago at Kiawah Island.

The 2022 Wells Fargo Championship purse is set for $9 million, with the winner’s share coming in at $1,620,000 – the standard 18 percent payout according to the PGA Tour’s prize money distribution chart.
The Wells Fargo Championship field is led by Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Abraham Anser and the best players in the world.
The 156-player arena is a one-year event for Quail Hollows in Charlotte, which hosts the President’s Cup this year instead of the event itself.
A cut is made after 36 holes for the top 65 players and a tie is made for the final two rounds of the tournament. All players who finish four rounds of the tournament will earn money.
How Much Champion Will Earn
Keith Mitchell takes a two-stroke lead at the 54-hole mark at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship. The 29-year-old Tennessee (and defending champion of GOLF.com’s “That’s Debatable” series) enters Sunday’s final round at 9-under, and if he is able to keep it up, his second as a PGA Tour pro. Will win.
The chase follows a group of top-tier players led by Rory McIlroy, who enters Charlotte on Sunday to ward off 18-month-old monsters. The 32-year-old has not won a professional event since the end of 2019, nor has he won a PGA Tour event since the Tour Championships earlier the same year. A win at Wells Fargo – just weeks after he began working with famed swing coach Pete Cowen – would go a long way in bringing back the four-time major winner’s confidence at a crucial time. McIlroy is just weeks away from competing in the PGA Championship on Kiawah Island, the same venue where he claimed victory at the PGA in 2012.
