Wayne Rooney asked Jamie Vardy if his wife could cut back on her media activities during the Euro 2016 football tournament because it was causing “distractions” to the England team, the High Court has heard.

Rooney told the “Vagatha Christie” libel trial that then-England manager Roy Hodgson and assistant manager Gary Neville were both concerned that Rebecca Vardy’s decision to write a column for the Sun during the competition was disrupting the team.

Rooney said it was “weird” that he had to hold talks with his fellow England striker, but the team’s management wanted to find a solution: “They asked me as captain to see if I could talk to Mr Vardy. I can talk about his wife’s issues.. We all knew this was a weird topic so I needed to talk to Mr. Vardy and ask him to talk to his wife – and ask him to calm down his wife. Ask to be asked.”

England’s record goalscorer was part of a team that was unexpectedly knocked out of the tournament by Iceland. While preparing for a match, Rooney took the time to talk to his fellow striker: “I remember the conversation I had with Jamie. It was a little awkward for me to talk about his wife with a teammate. I sat down with Jamie Vardy and he had coffee. It was such a strange moment.
