Wayne Barnes (born 20 April 1979) is a retired English international rugby union referee and barrister. He was a regular referee in the English Premiership, and refereed in the Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup. At international level, Barnes refereed matches in the Rugby World Cup, Six Nations, Rugby Championship and Pacific Nations Cup competitions. He is also a criminal barrister and partner at Squire Patton Boggs.

Referees’ salaries are based on the category they fall in – amateurs, women’s and professionals.
Rookies often get paid around £400 per match which equates to around £16k per year.
While the women will earn around £600 for casual play and £1.6k for the Main Event (99k annually).
But professional rugby referees can earn around £1.2k for lower level games and £2.2k for main event matches ($160k per year).
However, 2023 Rugby World Cup referees will reportedly receive around 5k points per game.
Cheating
This weekend, the ever-present Wayne Barnes will referee a record 10th Premiership final. In the wake of his achievement, a 2013 video has got a new life on TikTok, garnering a huge number of views.
We’ve all heard Nigel Owens’s famous conversations with players, and this one from Barnes is very reminiscent of the tough Welshman. Northampton Saints were facing Leicester Tigers when Saints’ Dylan Hartley made a comment which was considered offensive.
Just moments before his red card, Barnes had given Hartley a stern warning, “As a champion you don’t behave like this, please keep your comments to yourself otherwise I may have to deal with it through a penalty. Is.” Despite being warned in advance for his behaviour, Hartley began calling Barnes a “stupid cheater”, and it sounded as plain as day.
Barnes fouled out the Reds almost immediately, giving the Saints captain his marching orders in the biggest game of the season, which was a very bold call to say the least.
Wife
Wayne Barnes received death threats for refereeing the Rugby World Cup final, his wife has said.
English referee Barnes, 44, gave New Zealand’s Sam Kane a yellow card for a direct tackle on Jesse Kriel during South Africa’s 12-11 win in Paris on Saturday, which was upgraded to a red after a bunker video review .
Women’s Rugby Association co-founder Polly Barnes wrote on social media: “See you later at the Rugby World Cup. I won’t miss you, or death threats.” He referred to the “bad atmosphere at the Stade de France”.
Barnes received death threats from New Zealand fans in 2007 when he refereed the All Blacks’ World Cup defeat to France. Polly and her children were the targets of threats after playing a role in South Africa’s defeat to France last year.
Retirement
Wayne Barnes has vowed to ensure future referees are supported after confirming his retirement less than a week after receiving death threats following the World Cup final.
Barnes was the man at the center of South Africa’s victory over New Zealand in Paris but was subjected to horrific online abuse after he dismissed All Blacks captain Sam Kane.
