No NFL player today could do what Walt Garrison did when he was the star fullback for the Cowboys from 1966-74.

Garrison played 119 regular season and 13 playoff games for the Cowboys over nine seasons and still ranks fourth on the club’s all-time list for average yards per rush (4.32) and ninth in career rushing yards (3,491). He was also a cowboy in the literal sense, performing in rodeos during the off-season and even, briefly, performing as a rookie the night before home games.

From nearby Denton, Texas, Garrison became addicted to rodeo at an early age and particularly excelled in steer wrestling (or ‘bulldogging’ in the local parlance). In fact, Garrison, who died last night at the age of 79, was almost as good at rodeo as he was at football and in fact enjoyed it more.

Walt Garrison has a net worth of $5 million.

How did die

The NFL team posted a notice on its website Thursday that Garrison died overnight. The cause of death was not mentioned in this. Garrison played nine years in Dallas and retired in 1974 as the No. 3 rusher and No. 4 receiver in franchise history.

Skoal

A fifth-round draft choice out of Oklahoma State, the 6-foot, 205-pound Garrison played nine years in Dallas and retired in 1974 as the No. 3 rusher and No. 4 receiver in franchise history. He still ranks fourth on Dallas’ career rushing list with 4.32 yards per carry and ninth with 3,491 yards rushing.

But it was Garrison’s rodeo career – what he calls his first love – that made him the ultimate cowboy. He lived in the U.S. for a long time. He was also a spokesman for Tobacco and its Skoal Smokeless brand, with one of his catchphrases in 1970s television programs being “Just a pinch between your cheek and gum, that’s all it takes”.
