American figure skater Vincent Zhou will not have a chance to compete for an individual medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics after his second test came back positive for COVID-19.

Zhou, 21, announced the end of his 2022 Olympic campaign in an emotional video posted to Instagram.

“It seems very unrealistic” to test positive for the coronavirus, Zhou said. “I have been doing everything in my power to stay free from COVID since the beginning of the pandemic,” he said, citing isolation and loneliness.

“The enormity of the situation, – just the pain of it all, is so insane,” he said.

Team USA figure skater Vincent Zhou has withdrawn from the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games after testing positive for COVID-19, according to US Figure Skating on Monday (February 7).

“I don’t know how to properly start this video, so I’m just going to start now,” Zhou said in an emotional video posted to his Instagram. “I have tested positive for COVID-19 and unfortunately, I will have to withdraw the individual schedule starting tomorrow.”

In an earlier media release, the federation said Zhou was being monitored by medical staff from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
