Trochek has kicked into a whole new gear this season, scoring 16 goals and 34 points in 31 games for the Hurricanes. Those totals put him third in both categories on a Panthers team that is desperate to help with scoring from the middle and depth.

One thing that Trochek brings is that his 200-foot game is hard to find. Even at 5-foot-10, 183 lbs, he can use his quickness and skill with the stick to force turnovers and bring the puck to the other side. He can then burst into the offensive zone and be in a position to score.

Trochek is sixth in Panthers history in shorthand goals with seven. He is tied with captain and penalty kill wonderkind Alexander Barkov, by the way. He is effective on both ends of the ice.

Take for example this goal scored against Florida. He began the play with a beautiful bank pass in the defensive area around Radko Gudas to feed Martin Necas. He then cracks the ice, gets a pass on point, and cruises right to a beautiful target with that wicked shot of his.

He’s a great playmate, a great shooter, and a great skater, who will be the perfect asset to this Panthers squad that’s up for brawl. Instead, he’s playing for one of the Panthers’ biggest competitors, and he’s back to bite them.

Vincent Trochek was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes by the Florida Panthers on Monday for Eric Houla, Lucas Wallmark, Etu Luostarinen and Chase Priskey. “It’s my first time doing business and I’ve spent all my time in Florida, so it’s hard to say goodbye to those guys,” Trochek told the news.

For Rangers, signing Trochek immediately makes him a better team because he can play up and down the lineup on both power plays and penalty kills. He is also an elite in the faceoff circle, finishing with more than 50 percentage points in six of his nine seasons in the NHL. Apart from all this, he is a machine in the hitting department, scoring hundreds in seven consecutive campaigns. Finally, he’s a play driver with a career corsi—for 55.6 percent, which means his team pucks more often when his blades aren’t on the ice.

Trochek should immediately slot into the second row with Artemi Panarin, who previously held the position held by Ryan Strom. He will also bring positive attendance for both the special teams. On a team that struggled in the faceoff department last season, he should also increase his possession count in all areas. Dominance in the dot is important, especially when you have skilled players like Panarin, Mika Zibnejad and Chris Kredder, who all thrive when the puck is on the stick. Overall, he could become one of the most valuable free-agent signings of the 2022 class.
