Retirement reactions
Vince McMahon announced his retirement as WWE’s president and CEO this evening, taking over from his father, Vince Sr., in 1982, taking the wraps off 40 years as head of the company.
It’s a seismic development—and one that sent the wrestling world into a tailspin.
Internally, there is an “all hands on deck” meeting on the cards.
This is according to Fightful Select, who report that the company-wide Zoom meeting was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. EST. WWE reported Vince’s retirement to its personnel via email earlier today, though a talent told the outlet they would believe it when Vince stops appearing on the show. Meanwhile, another quipped that he expected Vince to be at the helm of WWE until his death.
McMahon said in his official WWE statement that he would continue to be the majority shareholder of the company. Whether he was giving up his hold on the creative was unclear, but sources in Fightful have said that this is the case. McMahon is no longer the head of creative.
Retirement letter
A Reddit user has leaked Vince McMahon’s retirement letter, which was sent to all WWE Superstars to move on from this era in their lives.
The news of Vince McMahon’s retirement from WWE was accompanied by a tweet and the official WWE Corporate Press Release. Vince expressed how proud he is to serve as the President and CEO of WWE for so long, reportedly even sending a memo to WWE personnel notifying him of the departure.
This memo has now reportedly leaked. Reddit user kerrmit125, a verified source who has correctly reported various news stories in the past, posted the letter in full:
“To all the WWE Superstars: As I turn 77 (OMG am I really that old?), I feel like it’s time for me to retire. I need to take my passion, knowledge, and business out of the way.” It’s so much fun sharing the love of K. With you, you will no longer see the smiling, polite, level-headed, cool presence in Gorilla every week.
Your dedication to WWE will ensure that our company continues to grow and prosper. Our organization is nothing without you. You are WWE’s only natural resource, chosen to perform in front of a global audience.
You are all WWE Global Ambassadors. Carry the WWE flag with you wherever you go. Make it high and proud. And bust your ass for whoever you can be as a person and as an artist.
One more thing- I won’t be with you, but I’ll keep watching. Remember to put your hands up, hold and sell. BTW, SmackDown airs tonight at 8PM / 7PM on Central Fox.
Vince”
