Vincent Joseph Dooley (September 4, 1932 – October 28, 2022) was an American college football coach (seasons 1964 to 1988) and athletic director (1979 to 2004) at the University of Georgia (UGA). During his 25-year head coaching career at the UGA, Dooley held a record of 201-77-10. His teams won six Southeast Conference titles and the 1980 national championship. After the 1980 season, Dooley was recognized as college football’s “Coach of the Year” by several organizations, including the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, whose annual award has been renamed the Paul “Bayer” Bryant Award.

Dooley was the Bulldogs’ head coach from 1964 to 1988, and he also served as the athletic director of the University of Georgia from 1979 to 2004.

Coaching record
Coaching the Bulldogs from 1964 to 1988, Dooley’s career record was 201-77-10, a stretch that included six Southeastern Conference titles, 20 bowl games, and just one losing season.
“Our family is shocked by the passing of Coach Dooley. He was one of a kind with an unmatched love for the UGA!” said current Georgia coach Kirby Smart.
Dooley is the fourth most winning coach in SEC history, behind only Bear Bryant, Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier.
“Vince Dooley was one of my favorite people in the world,” Saban said. “Vince represented the University of Georgia and all college football with tremendous integrity and class as both coach and athletics director.”
After retiring from coaching, Dooley continued as the school’s AD, a job he held from 1979 to 2004. The Sanford Stadium ground was dedicated in his honor during the 2019 football season.
The school’s current athletic director Josh Brooks said the big money program he now guides is “because of Vince Dooley today.”
Dooley was the second prominent member of Georgia’s storied football history to die in the past two weeks.
Hall of Famer Charlie Trippie, who starred in Georgia in the 1940s and claimed the NFL championship with the Chicago Cardinals, died on October 19 at the age of 100.
Dooley’s death came just a day before Georgia, the current national champion and ranked No. 1 in the country, faced one of their biggest rivals, the Florida Gators, at the annual “cocktail party” game in Jacksonville, Florida. Does matter.
