Vincent Joseph Dooley (September 4, 1932 – October 28, 2022) was an American college football coach (seasons 1964 to 1988) and athletic director (1979 to 2004) at the University of Georgia (UGA). During his 25-year head coaching career at the UGA, Dooley held a record of 201-77-10. His teams won six Southeast Conference titles and the 1980 national championship. After the 1980 season, Dooley was recognized as college football’s “Coach of the Year” by several organizations, including the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, whose annual award has been renamed the Paul “Bayer” Bryant Award.

No cause of death was given. Dooley was hospitalized this month with what was described as a mild case of COVID-19, but made a full recovery and returned to the campus bookstore ahead of the October 15 game against Vanderbilt Were ready to attend his regular book-signing session.

Coaching the Bulldogs from 1964 to 1988, Dooley’s career record was 201-77-10, a stretch that included six Southeastern Conference titles, 20 bowl games, and just one losing season.

Dooley is the fourth most winning coach in SEC history, behind only Bear Bryant, Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier.

“Vince Dooley was one of my favorite people in the world,” Saban said. “Vince represented the University of Georgia and all college football with tremendous integrity and class as both coach and athletics director.”

After retiring from coaching, Dooley continued as the school’s AD, a job he held from 1979 to 2004. The Sanford Stadium ground was dedicated in his honor during the 2019 football season.

The school’s current athletic director Josh Brooks said the big money program he now guides is “because of Vince Dooley today.”

Georgia coach Kirby Smart also shared a heartfelt statement on Twitter shortly after the UGA’s announcement. Dooley appeared in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship, which saw Smart lead the Bulldogs to their first national championship since their victory 41 years earlier.
