Motorcycle racing’s governing body, the FIM, announced on Tuesday evening that a Dutch rider had died after suffering a head injury in a multi-rider crash at Turn 14 in Saturday’s opening race on a Portuguese track.

The race was immediately halted due to the accident, delaying the rest of the day’s schedule and as a result the weekend’s World Superbike race that afternoon was cut from 20 to 14 laps.

Steiman, aboard the MTM Kawasaki, was airlifted to a medical center in the nearby town of Faro before being airlifted to hospital, where he tragically died several days later.

A statement released by Steiman’s family said: “As the parent of a motorcycle racer you’ve always had something to fear. Our Victor couldn’t win this last race.

World Superbikes said on Tuesday that Dutch World Supersport 300 motorcyclist Victor Steimann has died of injuries sustained in an accident in Portugal.

The 22-year-old Kawasaki racer crashed with another rider on Saturday’s race at the Algarve circuit and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Faro.
“Despite the best efforts of Circuit’s medical staff, marshal and hospital staff, Steiman tragically succumbed to his injuries,” World Superbikes said.
Steiman started the Portuguese round of the championship this season with a mathematical chance of winning the title after four victories.

His family said he had been able to save five others by donating his organs.
Steiman died less than a week after British superbike rider Chrissy Rouse, 26, suffered a head injury after she was hit by another rider at a race at the Donington Park circuit in England.
