The franchise began playing as an expansion team in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz (as a tribute to New Orleans’ history of the origins of jazz music). Jazz moved to Salt Lake City in 1979. The Jazz was one of the least successful teams in the league in its early years. Although 10 seasons passed before the Jazz qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1984, they did not miss the playoffs again until 2004.

The Jazz took a six-point lead with almost three minutes to go before Houston used a 6–1 run, with Wood’s first five points, to take a 113–112 lead with almost a minute to spare. Porter made one of two free throws after Wood was worked. Mitchell then made 1 of 2 free throws after Porter went into the lane to tie with 34.1 seconds to go.

Both Stockton and Malone moved in in 2003. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, the Jazz returned to prominence under the on-court leadership of point guard Daron Williams. However, during the 2010–11 season, the Jazz began restructuring following Sloan’s retirement and Williams’ trade to the New Jersey Nets. Quinn Snyder was appointed as head coach in June 2014. With the development of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell into All-Stars, the Jazz launched themselves back into title contention, eventually earning the league’s best regular season record in the 2020–21 season.
